Psychotherapy
What Is Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy (sometimes called “talk therapy”) is a type of treatment that explores relationships, emotions, and behaviours to help identify patterns that may be holding you back from the life you wish to live.
During your sessions, you will work collaboratively with a licensed mental health professional in a validating, compassionate, and judgment-free environment. The focus of these sessions is to to help reduce or even eliminate maladaptive thoughts and behaviours. As each client is different, the individual goals of psychotherapy will vary. All clients are met where they are and, together, we work to develop healthier, more effective, long-lasting coping skills.
When Is PSYCHOTHERAPY Recommended?
Psychotherapy can be effective in helping to treat most mental health issues, including (but not limited to) anxiety, depression, emotional regulation, family conflict, grief, motivation, relationships, stress, past trauma, and substance abuse.
Psychotherapy is recommended if you have been experiencing severe or long-term mental health issues that have begun to impact daily functioning. It can also benefit individuals experiencing a sudden change in appetite or sleep, low energy, trouble focusing, and lack of interest in previously enjoyed activities.
Neither a referral nor formal diagnosis is required to attend psychotherapy.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Psychotherapy sessions can take many forms depending on the personalized needs of the individual and the situation. There is not a one-size fits all approach to treatment.
The sessions may occur in an individual, couple, family, or group setting and can be helpful for both children and adults. You will likely schedule regular, recurring sessions with your therapist. Depending on your needs, you may choose to engage in psychotherapy in either the short or long term.
All therapy sessions are collaborative. During each session, the therapist works with the client to help identify concerns, set goals, and develop effective techniques and strategies to assist clients through the process.
You will likely schedule regular, recurring sessions with your therapist. Depending on your needs, and individual goals, clients may choose to engage in psychotherapy for short or long durations. During each session, the client’s progress, individual goals, and treatment plans are assessed. Treatment interventions are modified and adjusted as needed to help clients reach their goals and achieve success.
